Chantix Warnings
Chantix was approved for use by the FDA in 2006, after an abbreviated review period, based on the results of the clinical trials presented by the manufacturers, Pfizer, and because it allegedly had no harmful side-effects.
At that point Pfizer did concede that the product had not been tested on pregnant or breast feeding mothers, or on persons under the age of 18, and the labelling reflected this caveat.
After release in May 2006, Chantix (Varenicline) next made the news in September 2007 when the use of this drug was implicated in the death of musician Carter Albrecht.
Various reports, including the banning of Chantix usage by pilots and air traffic controllers, increased susceptibility to drowsiness and mood swings, depression, and suicidal tendencies caused the FDA to insist on a modification to the Chantix labelling. The FDA's strongest safety warning, a Black Box warning, was the result, as of July 2009.
New developments in recent research have prompted the FDA to inform Medical Practitioners and Chantix users that the use of Chantix may contribute to cardiovascular disease. The manufacturers have been requested to perform full clinical trials, and to submit the findings to the FDA.
Update: 22 July 2011
Chantix (varenicline) Label update approved by FDA
The FDA (Food and Drug Administration) have given their approval to a revised Chantix (varenicline) label. The revised label now includes information about the effectiveness and safety of Chantix (varenicline) for persons with cardiovascular disease and chronic obstructive pulmonary disease. Now also on the label are alternative recommendations to smokers on selecting a stop smoking date.
